Well I just can't help myself sometimes. When I look at images of parks and places in the magazines I see something I just have to paint. What is funny is it always has a lake or water in it. Must be because we have always been around water, the kids grew up being on boats on the weekends and holidays, water skiing, swimming, fishing and camping next to the water. Particularly Fort Hammer in Parrish FL and the white sugary sands and clear emerald green waters at Egmont Key and the Bradenton beaches.

I started a painting of a Forrest scene with of course a lake and small waterfall. I don't have far to go now before I'm finished. I can't wait to share it with you!

I have already planed my next landscape which is going to be a seascape or beach scape LOL.

The weather is cooling, the pool water is getting too cold to get in and since I can't figure out what to plant in my small garden. It's time to start planning my next painting.
I have a couple subject matter in mind. Hoooray!
I'm hoping to get started next week.

I missed the deadline to put my application in for Art on the Square here in Athens, AL., plus I didn't have enough paintings to show. If I get started soon hopefully I will have by next year.

Spring is near!

Isn't it funny how nice weather seems to energize us, I know it does me!
Oh Spring! How it makes me feel alive!
There are several ideas I'm working on and putting down in the journal lest I forget later on. And one idea seems to inspire so many more!
I have some thoughts on a painting that will take several canvases and the finished product will take more wall space which is a good thing. :)

Sunlight and shorter days
Here it is July 30th. and the days are already getting shorter.
It's a little after 5:a.m and its still dark. I dread the short cold days of winter. I do like everything else about fall & winter like the changing of the leaves, the deer that come out to play, the interesting shapes of a stark tree, well most everything but the cold. Because I get cold easy :-| I have to wear layers of clothes and being bundled up is so confining.
I do get more painting done in the winter tho.

I have been playing with some ideas I have had and will sketch some of them out today and see what happens. I am pushing towards a still life.

My thoughts this morning about Art n Life;
Sometimes life as an artist can be overwhelming.
Every where we go we are sure to see something worth making notes in our mind... the colors of something we see, the lines of an old building, and oh... the sky is ever wondrous with design changing events from day to day, hour to hour. That's Art n Life!
I am in awe sometimes when I look around at the creations God has made.
Doesn't it make you wonder how He even thought of the smallest details of things we don't even see, the tiny little cells and how everything has a purpose!

In my working career, I use to look at cells and things with microscope, grow things on a petri dish and give the reports to the doctors which in turn treated their patients.
I will never forget how amazed I was when I first started learning, I couldn't believe the things I saw that could never be seen with the naked eye. These living cells all had a job to do whether it was to protect our bodies from infection or if it was a fungi, etc. It was amazing.

The world around us is like that, everything has a purpose, a shape, a color, its own beauty. Creations like the autumn colors on trees and bushes, nature from flowers to weeds, animals and humans, etc., beauty is everywhere, and yes, that's art-n-life!
God's creations are so unique and so amazing! I can't help but to say Thank You Father for all you have done.

A Daily Devotional

Each morning when I get up (around 3:30 or 4:00) I grab a cup of java and read my email. This is my quite time of day to catch up with things and watch the sun come up and listen to the birds sing as they start their busy days. I am subscribed to a wonderful list that is called the 'Daily Devotional' that is sent to my email and waiting for me each morning, it makes the day start out right.

I have finished this painting, at least for a few days. The time it takes me to study it and make any final adjustments. I painted this on a 2" cradled hardboard. 18"x24", acrylic medium.

Looking Out

I started a new painting last week and have the arch, sky and water done, of course there will be some changes once I start on the boat. But for now I'm satisfied.

I will post a few pic's of how its coming along, even the mistakes, lol. Well, no one is perfect are they?

I laid the background in first to get my idea's down. Now to decide on the type of boat.

Do I want to go with the very old ship or something newer like the beautiful sail boats we see today. I will research pic's to see what catches my eye.

Now that the holidays are behind us...
Have time on your hands?
Pick up a brush and paint or crayons or colored pencils or anything to make art with. It is the creating and doing that is so satisfying and the interest it sparks. If you've never made art, please try I bet you like it. It doesn't have to be great or perfect, the idea is to get started and being able to make out what the art piece is. It could be flowers, a single daisy or rose or even a single leaf or grape and it doesn't have to look realistic or even close... you get the picture (no pun intended).

Then share it with your friends or relatives, maybe get them interested. After they see how excited you are and satisfied with your life.
What use to be boring hours in between all the hectic activity around you and the interest in life art causes, you will find a new person within. Get the kids in on it also, have a family hour to just be together and create. And on some nice days have a family picnic outing to go photo shooting of trees, buildings, foliage. It's great fun and you and the family will enjoy it, don't forget about your friends, they may like to come along to.

God gave us his only child, could WE do the same for people that we disapprove of or the thieves, cheats and simply put, the bad people of the world? It's something we REALLY need to think on. I am soo thankful someone loved me or even thought of me that much!

In The Valley

A commissioned painting. I was asked for a painting that had a western flair with a cabin, horses and maybe a wagon. As it turns out, the wagon is taken from a reference pic I had on hand of my husbands family wagon on a farm in N. Dakota where he is from and the cabin is from a pic my granddaughter brought back from Cades Cove, N. Carolina of her great (or great, great) grandfathers historic cabin Mr. John Oliver, one of the first settlers.

Sometime during the last 3 days before I send a painting on its way, I will put it on the www either privately or public, depends. So I can view it in another perspective, only then do I decide if a painting is done after the clients approval of course.

Three Friends

Fall is here, and now almost winter. How time slips by!

This painting gave me a few ideas for a name. I started out with the name of 'Autumn Blessings', then because of the three trees in front I decided to name it.. 'Three Friends' which reminds me of us three gals (Dottie, Sonnie and me) that worked together at a nearby doctors office (and one of the nicest doctors, with a big heart and compassion for each of his patients) and became the best of friends, we always said when we got too old to take care of ourselves we three would terrorize a nursing home racing our wheelchairs and laughing at each other untill we were weak (grin). If we three were together, we were having a good time! Over the years we still try to stay in touch, although many miles apart.

Fall Is Here

I can't believe fall is here already. Is it me or did we have a really nice and fast or short summer? And, is it me or did we jump right into winter? Hasn't it been cold!

One of my best friends took some pictures of the fall leaves up in the mountains of N.C. where she lives and they are so colorful and beautiful. I am posting one or two that I'm using for reference on my next painting.

The colors of fall always put me in awe of what awesome miracles God does in our lives and somehow it is hard to describe my feeling of thanks so I wind up just giving a simple thank you Lord and know he understands.

I have the background of my painting done, now I am painting in the trees that are close-up and the detail. It has taken me about 3 weeks so far to get this one close to done.... life gets in the way sometimes. :)

I am hoping to have this one done soon and get it posted here.

Indian Scene

My granddaughter and her fiancé just got back from Cherokee and Maggie Valley on an Authenic Indian souvenir buying spree to decorate their game room. While they were gone I painted them an indian scene for them as their Christmas gift. I hope they like it. It was Jerry Yarnell inspired.

I thought I had better pick up the brush again before I get into another long lull of non-painting.
Why do I do that? I do love, love, love to paint.

So I decided to paint landscape, without plan, or thought and see what happens.
Don't have enough done yet to take a photo of to show here, but will try to do more tomorrow and hopefully post it here soon.

I hate that I missed the application deadline for the 'Art on The Square' here in Athens. I knew it was coming up but didn't know what month.
Maybe next year I will find out about it sooner (before the deadline).
I'm really looking forward to browsing and looking at all the lovely paintings and hopefully meeting some of the artists.

I finely painted the Mrs. Tom in. I didn't add much detail because I wanted her to be 'un-interesting' (although she does look like she's nagging him, lol) since he is showing off his full masculine self.

Ya know, I decided I really do like these new acrylics (SoHo acrylic paints) and I really enjoyed painting the wild turkeys.

I think I favor painting the wild feathered friends and landscapes more then anything else the past few years, although I do like painting a still life on occasion to.
But, I have noticed my thinking and browsing has been going to the child portrait side of things, does this mean my artistic wings are going to spread again?
I really wouldn't mind, after all, artist are suppose to be adventurous and creative right?
Again on second thought it kind of scares me, the only time I have ever attempted such a thing is when I was in high school and the whole art class had to paint a portrait of a real person by memory using pastels after a few short lessons.
I can actually say at that time, I thought it was very good. I wish I still had it now but as time goes on and we move on, things get trashed or lost. We'll see what happens in the future.

I'm so glad I have the desire to paint again, I was beginning to get worried.

Creativity, thoughts, putting it all together... more on this subject another time.

Well, I have been working on this one for a couple of weeks now (guess I should post the date 05/22/2009).
I took about 50 pic's of a friend of ours stuffed turkey for future reference and finely decided to paint this big guy. Still have some work to do and I am going to paint a femaile turkey in to. Hopefully next week will be uneventful and I can get to the painting and finish it.
I am using a new brand paint (to me) called SoHo acrylic and really love it, it gives the same sheen as oil paints and has enough body you can show stroke work if needed or wanted.

This is the easiest Store I've ever set up. I love it!

I'm finely itching to get started painting again.
I have some photos I took of a friends stuffed turkeys from when he went game hunting.
I never realized that turkeys had 'beards'. (laughing)

I have enough snapshots of them and closeups so I get the detail I will need especially since I don't remember the feather detail in different layers and that silly looking red thing that hangs from their head. I am going to read about that sometime so I know what it is and the why's.

Maybe today after church or tomorrow I can get started on it. Come back and visit with me and hopefully we can see some results in a day or two.

Is It Artists Block or Lack of Umph?

Does anyone get these blocks where you want to paint but just can't figure out what ya want to paint or how you want to put it together? I have been having that problem for sooo long! I look at some of the photos I have taken of the river, flowers, scenery, etc. and just can't seem to come up with anything or put anything together.

The other day I was looking at a furniture sales flyer I got in the mail from a local store and saw some paintings with high dollar tags on them and got to wondering... these are just simple landscapes with trees, grass and such with nothing specific in them, could this be what people are looking for in a painting just to have something on their walls? The more I thought about it, I thought maybe it is a good idea... I guess. Then furniture could be changed, colors could be changed and the paintings like this are so neutral that they would go with most designs. And with the economy the way it is, this could be a good thing or is anyone still spending $ ?

I haven't done any art and craft shows since we've been here, just about 2 yrs now and haven't painted up that much but have lots of old stuff that has been scratched up in the move. I need to freshen them up with some new paint and do a show, but don't have enough canvases painted to take and there are so many artists here I think it would very hard for me to compete but maybe if I stick to the kind of paintings in that flyer and nothing over a hundred bucks since the other artist high priced I might be able to sell some stuff and get some potential clients.

Last year I went to some art & craft shows and there was sooo many girls doing one stroke that a lot of the booths were looking the same although they were all beautiful and the surfaces were varied, I decided that I will have to repaint some of my old stuff. But, its all still sitting out in the garage.

Maybe... if I could find someone with same interest here in our little town to share a booth with or paint with, that would make it all fun again.

Warm Wild Flowers

I am finding that its hard to get started when I have stopped painting for a while for whatever reasons. It's almost like starting over and learning the same things I have done before all over again.

I decided I need to paint, wheather it is good, bad or in between I had to get started.

So finely, I started this painting about 2 weeks ago or so and finished today. It put me back in the spirit to paint and was much needed.

Are great for reading, painting, housework, baking and maybe a big pot of chili to.
If time permits, I've been thinking about doing a painting of still life, maybe a wine bottle, hopefully a glass half full of wine, grapes and leaves, candle, cheese and of course I will have to throw in some daisies since I love them.
Just need the time to sit and sketch how I want them placed and decide on colors for background and table cloth. But then by the time I get ready to start it, seems like things change and elements are added and some even taken out completely. I guess I'll see what happens.
I will post my final painting when done.

I have run on to some really interesting Blogs for artists.
But, one that captured my heart is the "Art Helping Animals" blog (http://arthelpinganimals.blogspot.com/).
We have always loved animals, I'm very partial to mini Schnauzers.
I've had two in my lifetime and both were the smartest and easiest to train dogs of all we've ever had. They are like little people.
But back to reason I'm posting this...

In (West) Athens, AL
Just a few days ago, our neighbors dog came up missing
and the whole neighborhood has been looking for her. We
call her our little neighborhood (a neighborhood of only 7 houses)
dog, we all love her.

She looks like a mix of boxer and pit, light brown and white hair
with the most loving and sweet natured personality.
She just had puppies 2 weeks ago and now the 8 little pups
have no mother to nurse from. The owners of the dog
are just sick and broken hearted, a young couple with
twin baby girls a couple months old have taken turns
scouring the countryside for their beloved dog, and feeding,
cleaning and caring for the pups between taking care of their
twin babies.
I guess I wrote about this in hopes someone
may read it and just happen to be from this area or close
that may see a young dog that looks like her and is a strang dog in
your area. Please contact us.
We would like to reunite this little dog with her family and
neighborhood family.

I saw a TV artist teaching this beautiful scene so, when the show was over I couldn't resist trying it myself.

I did change it some to make it my own.

We live in a beautiful county with lots of water, hills and country landscape.

I have to get out and get some pictures taken before the weather turns cold.

I plan on taking lots of pictures for reference to use when it's too cold to visit the countryside and will share these for your painting reference also.

Maybe a "paint-in" would be fun for us. Your paintings can be posted to. Sounds like fun to me.

Blogging with Betty
I am not confident enough to call myself a fine artist, maybe a student of art or emerging artist in impressionism. To me, art seems to be ever learning. There are so many things and images, new mediums, brushes, techniques, etc. to try and to learn. I love it, it keeps my interest going.

Besides being fun, it is relaxing and a wonderful way to get away from the hectic schedules. Kind of like slipping away for a little bit.

I enjoy painting from photos of landscapes, scenery, our feathered friends and some animals, painting structures like old barns and buildings and familiar sites of local towns and towns where I have visited. Occasionally I paint saws (esp. like the old two handled cross cut saws) with tractors and farm scenes.
